In warfare the lowly foot soldier is the heart of the army. It is he who blazes the way for those to follow. It is he who is the one who bears the brunt of the attacks. It is he who claims the final victory when they enter the enemy camp.

So it is on the chess board too. Philidor called pawns “The Soul of Chess”! It is the humble pawn who can dominate the centre of the board. It is he who is a willing sacrifice to open lines to the enemy King. It is he who can advance and smother the opposition. Finally, it is he who seeks to arrive at the final square, become a Queen and win the game for his army.
So to win the title of Humble Pawn is an achievement of significant proportion!
